François Quitin
François Quitin, Ph.D.
Biography
I received my Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), Brussels, Belgium and from the Université catholique de Louvain (UCL), Louvain-La-Neuve, Belgium in 2011, and my M.Sc degree in Electrical Engineering from ULB in 2007.

From 2007 to 2011 I worked as an F.R.S.-F.N.R.S. research fellow at the OPERA Department, ULB. In 2011, I joined the Wireless Communications and Sensornets Lab at the University of California, Santa Barbara as a B.A.E.F. post-doctoral fellow. I was granted the Alcatel-Lucent Bell Scientific Award 2012 for most innovative thesis in ICT in Belgium in 2012. I also received the WoWMoM 2012 conference best demo award and the EuCAP 2009 best propgation poster paper award. During my thesis, I was an active member of the european COST 2100 action.

My research interest focus on experimental and prototyping aspects in wireless communications, taking advanced theoretical ideas all the way to practice.

Research
Distributed MIMO systems : MIMO systems have gained in incredible amount of attention over the last decade. By using multiple antennas at transmitter and receiver side, it is possible to increase range and/or power efficiency, reduce interference, robustify communications etc. In distributed MIMO systems, a lot of single-antenna terminals are grouped together to emulate a virtual antenna array. The aim of this project is to investigate advanced distributed MIMO techniques, like distributed-transmit beamforming or distributed-receiver beamforming. The techniques we develop are implemented and tested on real terminals using software-defined radios.

Note that all these implementations have been tested with GNURadio-3.5.0rc0. In all cases, you should get familiar with GNURadio before trying out any of these implementations.

UAV-based wireless communication networks : The broad goal of this project is to use Unmanned Autonomous Vehicles (UAVs) with mounted tranceivers to create reconfigurable communication networks. Imagine for example that a natural disaster wipes out the cellular infrastructure. A set of UAV could quickly be deployed to replace the cellular infrastrucutre, thereby offering emergency connectivity to victims. So far, we are investigating how a unmanned aerial vehicle can track the source of an RF signal. Given the variability of the RF signal, this is a huge challenge: one must take into account path loss, shadowing, fast-fading, antenna patterns etc. We are implementing our algorithms on a real UAV using an AR.Drone quadrotor.

Channel Modeling for Polarized MIMO Systems
: In future wireless systems, multiple antennas will be used at the transmitter and at the receiver side to increase the data rates. The problem of multi-antenna systems is that the antennas have to be spaced several centimetres, increasing the overall equipment size. This problem can be resolved by using polarization diversity. These systems used perpendicularly polarized, co-located antennas to decrease the size of the mobile terminal. The aim of this project is to establish an experimental channel model that can be used for simulating and describing polarized MIMO systems.
