Photonic Integrated Transmitter and Receiver
Components for RF Links with Gain

Funded by DARPA via SPAWAR

(J.E. Bowers, PI)

The objective of Prof. Coldren's portion of this program is to fabricate widely-tunable DBR Lasers with quantum efficiency > 1.
One goal is to enable RF lightwave links with net signal gain.

This involves the development of:

• Integrated semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOA)

• Integrated electro-absorption modulators (EAM) to reduce coupling loss

• Novel semiconductor photonic devices with h > 1

• Integrated chip-scale technologies on InP

TFor the overall program there are three classes of novel components:

(1) high-efficiency widely-tunable Distributed Bragg Reflector (DBR) lasers,

(2) high-speed Electro-Absorption modulators (EAMs),

(3) high-efficiency and high-speed Traveling-wave Amplifier Photodetectors (TAP detectors).
