Scope

Ease of use has brought wireless communication an ever increasing popularity despite its mediocre speed and performance. As various wireless technologies catch up with the existing needs, the demand for higher bandwidth, faster and more reliable service increases. The key to breaking this cycle is for wireless communication to achieve wired like speed and performance. The bandwidth required for satisfying such needs is available in extremely high frequency band, i.e., millimeter wave spectrum. However, mm wave radio propagation is fundamentally different from that at the lower carrier frequencies used today for wireless communication due to the order of magnitude smaller carrier wavelength, while the projected multiGigabit data rates are an order of magnitude higher than in current mass market WiFi and cellular systems. This leads to a set of fundamental challenges that need to be addressed in order for mmWave communication to become a reality. These include realistic channel modeling, hardware and signal processing co-design for multiGigabit links in the presence of severe power and processing requirements, MAC and network protocol design for inherently directional and weak links, and the application of mmWave communication to new domains such as high definition video transfer and data center networks.

Recent advances in low-cost mm wave transceivers imply that the time is ripe to push for an interdisciplinary approach to address the grand challenges facing the mmWave communication. Researchers from disciplines spanning circuit design, communications, signal processing, networking, security, and applications such as data centers and home entertainment, need to come together to identify the fundamental bottlenecks, and to solve the problems that they represent. Eventual working solutions rely on cross-layer advances covering antenna design, circuits, physical layer, medium access, and application layer. The purpose of this workshop is to provide a high-quality interdisciplinary international forum for researchers and developers from academia and industry to discuss research findings and exchange information regarding advancements in the state of the art, as well as to identify the emerging research topics, open problems, and to define the future of mmWave communication.
