The ongoing revolution in cellular and wireless LAN communication systems has been propelled by integrated circuit (IC) implementation of sophisticated DSP algorithms that perform the bulk of the receiver functionality, such as synchronization, channel estimation and equalization, demodulation and decoding. Riding on Moore's law, i.e., the exponential scaling down of per-transistor size and cost, such DSP-centric architectures have provided the economies of scale necessary for rapid mass market …

Millimeter (mm) wave communication holds the key to the next phase of the ongoing wireless revolution, in which wireless catches up with wires in speed. The several gigahertz (GHz) of unlicensed spectrum in the 60 GHz “oxygen absorption” band, which is a part of the broader mm-wave band, is well-suited to short-range multiGigabit indoor (e.g., 10 meters range) and outdoor (e.g., 100-500 meters range) wireless links. Figure 1 shows the spectrum allocation around the 60 GHz band for some regions.…

Interference Analysis for Highly Directional 60 GHz Mesh Networks: The Case for Rethinking Medium Access Control

Authors: S. Singh, R. Mudumbai and U. Madhow

Journal: IEEE/ACM TRANSACTIONS ON NETWORKING, 2011.

Abstract:
We investigate spatial interference statistics for
multigigabit outdoor mesh networks operating in the unlicensed
60-GHz “millimeter (mm) wave” band. The links in such networks
are highly directional: Because of the small carrier wavelength
(an order of magnitude smaller tha…
