EVENT OVERVIEW
During their senior year all Computer Engineering students take the Senior Computer Systems Project aka “Capstone” courses. Every year at the end of the Spring quarter the ECE 189 final projects are presented at an industry supported and judged event where student groups publicly present their projects.

MORNING SESSION (9:00am-12:00pm) – ECE 189 CAPSTONE PROJECT PRESENTATIONS

  • 9:00 – Opening Remarks: Dr. Yoga Isukapalli
  • 9:05 – TiresiaScope: A headset that assists blind people in identifying nearby obstacles. Team: John Bowman, Trevor Hecht, Timothy Kwong, Devon Porcher, Brian Young
  • 9:30 – Gaucho Hawk: A printed circuit board with state-of-art sensors and relevant software for high precision drones. Team: Kurt Madland, Yesh Ramesh , Vikram Sastry, Richard Young, Jack Zang
  • 9:55 – SPOT: Device that helps astronauts path-find on unknown terrain, without an increase in cognitive load. Team: Saurabh Gupta, Bryan Lavin-Parmenter, Neil O’Bryan, Brandon Pon
  • 10:20 – * Deep Vision: Identifies and tracks targets such as dogs and people in real time by analyzing video recorded by the drone’s camera. Team: Chenghao Jiang, Terry Xie, Charlie Xu, Jenny Zheng
  • 10:45 – Wall-E: Waterborne Autonomous Low Light Electrostereovideography: A submersible low-light camera that can be deployed in tandem to analyze Ostracod courtship patterns using computer vision techniques. Team: Veena Chandran, Karthik Kribakaran, Wesley Peery, Franklin Tang, Vincent Wang, Karli Yokotake
  • 11:10 – Hover Hand: A glove that recognizes and converts hand movements to pilot a quadcopter drone. Team: Austin Dorotheo, Steven Fields, Colin Garrett, Miclos Lobins, Zach Meyer
  • 11:35 – ** UCSB Hyperloop: A communications, telemetry, and control unit for UCSB’s entry into SpaceX’s Hyperloop Pod Competition. Team: Cameron Bijan, David Donaldson, Alex Jun, Dylan Vanmali, Mark Wu

AFTERNOON SESSION (2:00-5:00pm) – COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING DESIGN EXPO (EDx) at Corwin Pavilion

  • Poster Session in the Courtyard (2:00-4:00pm)
    Student teams from Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical & Computer Engineering will be displaying posters and presenting final prototypes of their full year senior design projects. During this time, a panel of judges will review all the projects and select award winners. Attendees are invited to explore the various projects, speak to the students, and enjoy complimentary refreshments.
  • Design Showcase in the Pavilion (4:00-5:00pm)
    The exciting on-stage event will have a TED talk feel. Multidisciplinary design teams will present their work products. Find out who won the design competition and catch a performance of dancing robots that were developed by our freshmen engineers in conjunction with Isla Vista Elementary School students.

ABOUT THE CAPSTONE PROJECTS
The Capstone Project (ECE 189 or CS 189) courses give Computer Engineering students the opportunity to put their education into practice. Students, working in small teams, design and engineer innovative hardware and software systems using techniques from robotics, distributed systems, circuit design, networking, and real-time systems to tackle problems and create a final “tangible” project.
