"Terahertz Integrated Circuits and Imaging Applications"

THz frequency band is attracting growing interests for various potential applications such as broadband communication for high data rate and imaging for security, product inspection, biomedical diagnosis, etc. Traditionally, THz systems have been based on the optical approach typically employing femto-second lasers, but a recent approach based on solid-state electronic devices and circuits is gaining growing attention owing to compact, low-power, low-cost THz systems available with those electronic components. In this talk, various THz integrated circuits for signal generation, detection, and amplification recently developed at Korea University will be presented. Additionally, experimental application of some of these circuits for THz imaging will also be introduced, which includes reflection-mode bio imaging and transmission-mode 3D tomography imaging results.

About Jae-Sung Rieh:

photo of Jae-Sung RiehJae-Sung Rieh received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in electronics engineering from Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea, in 1991 and 1995, respectively, and his Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI, in 1999. In 1999, he joined the IBM Semiconductor R & D Center, where he was responsible for the development of high frequency SiGe HBT technologies. Since 2004, he has been with the School of Electrical Engineering, Korea University, Seoul, Korea, where he is a Professor. He is currently visiting the Department of Electrical Engineering at UCLA as a visiting scholar since August 2018. His major research interest lies in the mm-wave and terahertz devices and circuits. Prof. Rieh was a recipient of IBM Faculty Award (2004) and a co-recipient of IEEE EDS George E. Smith Awards (2002 and 2006) and IEEE MTT MWCL Tatsuo Itoh Best Paper Award (2013). He has served as an Associate Editor of the IEEE Microwave and Wireless Components Letters (2006-2009) and the IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques (2010-2013).
